Review, Anne with an E (season 1 - 3)

Anne with an E currently has 3 seasons with a total of 27 episodes altogether. The first season had 7 episodes, the second season had 10, while the third season had 10 as well. The series was based on the 8 book series Anne of Green Gables written by Lucy Maud Montgomery.

The story was beautifully written, it displayed characters with great principles and it brought duality, conflicts, prejudice, system failures, and dealings with the different situations and relationships in life.

The series deals with the circumstances of three characters becoming a family and their journey moving forward. It shines a light on the challenging scenarios as they are unveiled by the characters in a time that was more difficult and slightly different from today’s time. It was refreshing to see how they pictured the time accurately.

The series starts off with an elderly women named Marilla Cuthbert (Geraldine James) and her elder brother Mathew Cuthbert (R. H Thomson). They both live together in a house that they call Green Gables and both are unmarried. Marilla and Mathew wanted to adopt a boy to help work on the farm, but in end Anne (Amybeth McNulty) convinced Marella and Mathew to adopt her instead. Marilla and Mathew fraught with drama as they adjust, despite Anne’s many social gaffes, her brilliance and character eventually win over the stern matriarch, Marilla.

After enduring a traumatic childhood, she finds a safe haven and home on Prince Edward Island, Avonlea. It’s at that house we find Anne and her story as we follow her moving forward as she grows up and goes through many experiences, hardships, creating friendships, learning about herself, and so much more.

Along her journey Anne makes a friend named Diana (Dalila Bela), Anne meets her over at Diana’s mother’s (Helen Johns) tea party, which the Cuthberts were invited to. Diana kept confronting her own friends and schoolmates whenever they were mean to Anne. Diana is more down to earth than Anne but has a great appreciation for her best friend’s imagination, and never fails to compliment Anne on it.

Anne inspires young women to be proud of who they are and shows how difficult it was to be a women during those times, which pushes people to fight for equality more. One of the best things about the show was how it had many difficult problems that all added something and how people could deal with certain issues and find ways to get through hard times.

The protagonist Anne went through many difficult times. She was unappreciated and people always bullied her. Anne was traumatized about what people said about her and how they treated her. But now she inspires others to speak for women in general and girls in particular. The way Anne stands up for people is by speaking for herself showing off her charm and her ability to understand others. This makes other people feel like if there were more people like Anne they would be able to change the world for the better.

Throughout the first and the second season the show made us hate Josie Pye (Miranda McKeon) but she suffered through such a traumatic experience that made her want to fight for equal rights and she became a wonderful character. Prissy Andrews (Ella Jonas Farlinger) was a victim of grooming but she set herself free from the situation and came back in the third season as an independent women fighting for equality.

The colored people were separated from the others, but Anne showed everyone is different and that we shouldn’t disrespect them. The People who were mistreated where normally all colored individuals such as Bash (Dalmar Abuzeid) and Ka’kwet (Kiawentiio Tarbell), but Anne was the only one that didn’t care where people first originated.

Anne loved to meet all kinds of people and connect with them, she always knew they were kindred spirits and never judged them for who they were and came from. We come from many different places and just as we judge others, others can just as easily judge us without a doubt. They had added Ka’kwet’s family to raise awareness towards indigenous people.

The third season really pushed the boundaries to show us that things can change quickly and for the better. From the moment Anne stepped into her new life at Green Gables, she knew she was going to have a life time of adventures. It was really loving to see Anne and Gilbert as they wrote each other letters and it angered me to see them get stepped on and be ripped apart. It was exciting to see them kiss and say their goodbyes on the last episode and would like to see their romance grow more in season four.

Even though this takes place in the past, it covers all of these important topics that people need to learn more about in today’s society. The series has everything in the best ways and it balances all of its elements perfectly. The performance level, the acting was done very well and the plot was written out beautifully by creating a cinematic film for anyone to watch. It teaches everyone how to be greatful and look at life in a simpler and more meaningful way.
