Review, Ice Age: Collision Course (2016)

A massive asteroid has been a major threat during the ice age. A giant asteroid was supposed to hit the planet, causing unimaginable destruction. All animals face the difficult choice between fleeing their homes or trying to find a way to keep the asteroid from hitting Earth.

Ice Age: Collision Course tells the story of the journey of three friends Manny, Sid, Diego, and Buck to prevent the asteroid from reaching the Earth. To save planet Earth, they face various challenges and obstacles such as dinosaurs hunting Buck and electrical storms.

Among these, asteroids pose the greatest threat to all animals. This threat raises many concerns due to its potentially devastating impact on life on Earth. We can see the depiction of the asteroid threat in Ice Age: Collision Course, where there will be many depictions of asteroid threats and efforts to prevent them.

The story begins with Scrat, a squirrel obsessed with oak seeds, who accidentally triggers a series of cosmic events that directs a large asteroid toward Earth. Recognizing this threat, Buck enlists Manny, Sid, and Diego to find a way to stop the asteroid.

They embark on a journey full of challenges and dangers, facing various obstacles in an attempt to save planet Earth. From meteor showers to dangerous natural traps, every step of the way they are faced with dangers that test their courage and teamwork.

Ice Age: Collision Course is an impressive movie with an attempt to save Earth from the threat of a massive asteroid. The film combines the trademark humor of the Ice Age series with an epic adventure involving saving the planet.

The story in the movie is very light, without any surprises or suspenseful plot twists. The characters in the movie face more diverse and challenging adventures, as well as the introduction of a new dinosaur world. However, the Collision Course fails to deliver a fresh new feel.

Compared to Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, this movie feels more predictable, so it makes this movie way more boring. I know Scrat is an important character, but his presence is getting annoying. Manny, Sid, and Diego lose most of their screen time where it is supposed to be their adventure and character development. This lessens the focus on the adventure and the dynamics between the main characters, which were usually the core of the previous movies.

In addition, the storyline is so similar to the familiar pattern in the Ice Age series that it does not provide any significant innovations or surprises. Again, I understand that the Ice Age movie series has a very light and predictable story, but this time it feels lighter than the previous movie. The predictable ending is that the earth will be saved, and they all become the heroes.

Although, I am grateful that the rescue of the asteroid was unique and different from my expectations. Instead of pushing the giant crystal rock towards the volcano, they released it and directed it towards the volcano with a different flow.

This part is quite nerve-wracking, what if it doesn’t work? Everything will be destroyed, and Manny’s relationship with Julian will be even more destroyed.  However, the production team managed to present a simple and predictable ending with a fairly unique rescue plot.

However, there is one important part that Granny (Sid’s grandmother) does at the end of the Earth rescue process, which is closing one of the holes with her stick. Had Granny not closed the hole, their rescue would have ended in vain and everything would have been destroyed.

The movie manages to deliver suspense by presenting a tense asteroid threat, but fails to bring a fresh new feel. The over-dominance of Scrat’s character has reduced the focus on developing a more in-depth main character.

Our Score 4.5/10
